The undercover RCMP agent was examined and cross-examined. The trial transcripts read like fiction—but the consequences were real. Visnei had fled to the Caribbean or some such place.

Bob spent two days reading and re-reading the documents Dowding had rescued from his cluttered office. The 1982 trial had been the last case Dowding handled before retiring.

“I could have been victorious in court, at least with regard to the painting,” Dowding promised. But Visnei had jumped bail, leaving his lawyer high and dry with nothing to defend.
